Upgrading from RouteConverter 2.x

You are running RouteConverter 2.x — the generation built for Java 8. This generation no longer receives updates, including map and routing updates: online map and routing services keep evolving, and only the current RouteConverter tracks those changes. The older a 2.x installation gets, the more its maps and routing fall behind.

The current release is the upgrade path. It reads the same GPS formats, and on Windows and macOS it is even easier to run than 2.x was.

Java is already included

RouteConverter 2.x needed a separately installed Java — the reason many 2.x setups still run Java 8. RouteConverter 3.5 and later need Java 21, and the Windows and macOS downloads bundle RouteConverter together with a Java runtime: download one file and double-click it, no separate Java install and nothing to configure. Only the Linux release still needs a Java 21 runtime — see Downloads.

What carries over from your 2.x setup

• Your GPS files are untouched. Routes, tracks and waypoints are ordinary files on disk, and the current version reads the same formats — see supported formats.
• Your settings come with you. RouteConverter keeps settings and downloaded data in the .routeconverter folder in your user home directory, not inside the program file, so the new version picks them up.
• Nothing is uninstalled. RouteConverter is portable software: the file you download is the program. Your old 2.x file stays where it is, and you can run both side by side until you are confident — delete the old file when you no longer need it.
