TomTom: file formats and how to transfer routes
TomTom navigation devices take routes as ITN itineraries and custom points of interest as OV2 files. ITN is also the usual exchange format in motorcycle touring circles, where a shared route is meant to be driven.
Formats TomTom reads
| Format | Extension | Use |
|---|---|---|
| TomTom Itinerary (recommended) | .itn | Itineraries (ITN) for the GO and Rider lines, MyDrive and the older HOME software. |
| TomTom POI | .ov2 | Custom POI sets (OV2) such as speed cameras, fuel stations and campsites. |
Which format to pick
Pick ITN for a route to drive, and OV2 for a set of POIs. The TomTom 9.5 variant is the one used by later devices; the TomTom 5 variant exists for older ones.
How to get a route onto TomTom
- Open the route, track or POI file in RouteConverter via File → Open.
- Pick Tom Tom 9.5 Route in the Save as dropdown.
- Save it via File → Save as. Copy the saved file to the device over USB, or send it through TomTom MyDrive. The target folder differs by model, so use the vendor's transfer tool or manual where in doubt.
