What can I do when I cannot see the map?

There are sometimes problems with the embedded Internet Explorer, which is used to display the map that is generated by Google Maps. Please check:

  • Can you access and use Google Maps with the Internet Explorer?
  • Is the security level of the zone "Internet" set to "medium-low" or "medium"?
  • Is the security service deactivated and the services center blocked by the registry? Then delete all keys below HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\InternetSettings\Zones except for 1, 2, 3 and 4 as recommended here and here.
  • Is JavaScript activated?
  • Is there a firewall that blocks the process RouteConverter.exe when it is accessing the embedded Internet Explorer?
  • If you are using Windows Vista please make sure that the file C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts contains the following entries:

    127.0.0.1 localhost

    ::1 localhost

The map of the Linux and Mac version most of the time do not work instantly, please search for solutions inside the forum.

Why doesn't the map work under Linux?

Since version 2.17 there are two map views, both of which have advantages and disadvantages. It's possible to switch between them:

Select Map View

The JavaFX-based map is enabled by default since version 2.17. It requires an Oracle JDK because the OpenJDK supports no JavaFX although it is installed by default on most Linux distributions. Should the map be printed, Java 8 is required because only the JavaFX in Java 8 supports printing.

The Eclipse SWT-based map requires the installation of libwebkitgtk-1.0-0. Nowadays most Linux distributions install version 3.0.

Why doesn't the map work with AVG Antivirus?

Frankly I have no clue.

But a fact is that since the mid of 2014 more and more users show up and ask for help since the map isn't working despite all their efforts. It seems, that AVG Antivirus offers no option to allow RouteConverter to use the Internet Explorer to display the map.

Several users have reported, that even deactivating AVG Antivirus didn't help. They had to uninstall(!) it and migrate to another antivirus software.

Fortunately there are no known problems with other antivirus products.

What can I do when I see error messages?

This should not happen. If you see them:

  • the output from the console
  • the log file produced by the program

Screenshots and a detailled description how I can reproduce the error are always very helpful.

How do I start RouteConverter from the console?

If you start RouteConverter from the console, it sometimes prints out useful information to find bugs and problems which are not logged into the log file. To get this output you need the .jar version of RouteConverter for your operation system.

On Windows

  • download 'RouteConverterPrereleaseWindows.jar'
  • type 'Windows-R'
  • type 'cmd'
  • navigate to the directory where your copy of RouteConverterPrereleaseWindows.jar is located by 'cd '
  • type 'java -jar RouteConverterPrereleaseWindows.jar'
  • copy the output from the console with 'Edit/Mark' and 'Edit/Copy' to send it to me

On Mac OS X

  • download 'RouteConverterPrereleaseMac.jar'
  • open 'Terminal'
  • navigate to the directory where your copy of RouteConverterPrereleaseMac.jar is located by 'cd '
  • type 'java -jar RouteConverterPrereleaseMac.jar'
  • send the output from the console to me

On Linux

  • I guess you now know how to help yourself :-)
Where can I find the log file?

Sometimes it's helpful to view or send the log file that RouteConverter is writing to track down problems. The file is called RouteConverter.log and may be found in the directory for temporary files of the current user (java.io.tmpdir):

  • Windows XP: c:\Documents and Settings\Your Username\Local Settings\Temp
  • Windows Vista/7: c:\Users\Your Username\AppData\Local\Temp
  • Mac OS X: search for the hidden RouteConverter.log somewhere below /tmp/
  • Linux: /tmp
  • Solaris: /var/tmp
What if I'm using Kaspersky Internet Security 2012?

If you're using Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 on a Windows 7 machine the solution is to flag RouteConverter as a “Trusted Application” when Kaspersky prompts. If you have already chosen to flag RouteConverter as only a “Partially trusted” or “Untrusted” application, Kaspersky places it in its “High Restricted”, “Low Restricted” or “Untrusted” groups, found in its “Application Control” settings, and RouteConverter has to be removed from there and placed in the “Trusted” group to allow it to work.

The reason for the "Network is unreachable: connect" and "Failed to connect to spawned VM" messages on the console is typically that some personal firewall or antivirus software is blocking the communication between the Internet Explorer and the RouteConverter process which is required to display the map.
